land stewardship is a part of who i've become. at the end of 2019 i moved upstate and began working as head chef at the sivananda yoga ranch in upstate new york. when the pandemic struck, the ashram shut down and i began working in the greenhouse pruning veggies. from there, i began composting, planting and began to develop an understanding of land stewardship by tending to the beings in this greenhouse.
when i returned to philly in 2021, i began a farm apprenticeship with urban tree connection and by the end the apprenticeship was offered the lead farming position. there i worked learning and educating folks using practices of food sovereignty and regenerative farming. building and dreaming in a black working class neighborhood brought my values and beliefs into context: land restores kinship and play. during that time, i taught workshops on black foodways, preservation and land organization. i loved creating an environment where youth, elders, and people of all ages could build generative and reciprocal relationships with the land.
